Send me some books, I beg you. I wish to feed my soul with beautiful thoughts.
Soledad Acosta de Samper (1833-1913) was a groundbreaking Colombian author, journalist, historian, feminist and publisher. Dolores, her first novella, tells the story of a spirited, beautiful young woman whose life is upended by a devastating family secret just as she falls in love for the first time. Through the lens of one family's story, the narrative reflects on societal attitudes towards gender, class, and illness, revealing what has (and hasn't) changed across centuries. Dolores presents an immersive portrait of nineteenth-century Colombia, rendering landscapes, public life, and elements of nature in vivid detail.
This new translation by Sara Abadía Alvarado updates an unpublished nineteenth century English translation of an iconic Latin American feminist text, making it accessible to readers in English in a way that corresponds to Acosta de Samper’s original vision.
